ESSENTIAL DOG CARE TIPS FOR NEW PUPPY PARENTS

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming, especially for first-time pet owners. From potty training to choosing the right food to scheduling vet clinics, there’s a lot that goes into pet parenting.

At Acoma Animal Clinic, we understand that it’s a big commitment and know you want to provide your new fur baby with the very best. To help you on your new journey, we’ve compiled a list of essential dog care tips to help set you and your new puppy up for success.

Puppy-Proof Your Home

Puppies are curious and can easily get into trouble, so it’s important to prepare your home for your new arrival. This helps prevent accidents and makes it easier for your dog to settle into its new home.

Block off unsafe areas: Use baby gates to block off areas such as stairs or rooms with delicate furniture.

Remove choking hazards: Keep small items that pose choking hazards out of your puppy’s reach. This includes items such as small children’s toys and hair ties.

Remove dangerous plants: Some house plants are toxic to dogs. To prevent accidents, be sure to remove any dangerous plants, such as aloe vera, palm lilies, and jade plants.

Secure hazardous items: Keep hazardous items, such as cleaning supplies, chemicals, and medications, secured and out of reach.

Check your yard: If your home has an outdoor space, ensure it’s secure and block off any escape routes.

Get the Basics

It can be easier to bring home your new fur baby when you’re well-prepared, which includes stocking up on the necessities. These items include:

  • Food and water bowls: Stainless steel or ceramic are good options because they are easy to clean.
  • Dog food: Get quality dog food that is appropriate for your dog’s age.
  • Dog bed or crate: Provide your dog with a comfortable, designated spot where they can relax and sleep.
  • Toys: For chewing and mental stimulation.
  • Leash and harness: For safe walking of your dog.
  • Collar and ID tag: Provide your contact information in case your dog gets lost.
  • Grooming supplies: This includes combs and brushes specifically designed for your dog’s coat type, as well as nail clippers.
  • Waste bags: For potty cleanup at home and during walks.
  • Dog car seat: For safe car travel, get a restraining system such as a dog car seat, crate, or harness.

Potty Training Tips

Potty training can be one of the most stressful parts of bringing home a new puppy. Patience and consistency are critical. Some puppies catch on quickly, while others need a bit more time. Either way, here are a few potty training tips to consider:

Crate training: Crate training serves multiple purposes. It can help with potty training because your puppy will not want to soil the area where they sleep. Plus, it provides your pup with a den-like area where they feel secure and relaxed. Get a crate that’s big enough for your dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around comfortably, but not so large that they can use one end as their potty spot.

Establish a schedule: Consistency is key, so create a regular potty schedule (especially after meals, naps, and playtime) and take your pup to the same potty spot each time. Use positive reinforcement by giving your puppy a treat and praise immediately after they go.

Expect accidents: Accidents are likely to happen, so don’t punish your dog when they occur. Instead, clean the area thoroughly to remove any odor, avoiding repeat accidents in that same spot.

Ease Into New Experiences

To help your puppy build confidence and adjust to new experiences with ease, gradually and safely expose your dog to new environments, new people, and other animals.

In general, it is best to proceed slowly and stick to calm settings before introducing your pup to crowded spaces such as busy dog parks. Be mindful of their body language. If your dog begins to growl, puts their ears back, tucks their tail, or cowers, this is a sign of stress. If your dog starts to become stressed, remove them from the situation and try later.

Welcoming a new puppy into your home isn’t always easy, but preparation, consistent routines, and support from the team at Acoma Animal Clinic can provide a solid foundation for success. Contact us today with any questions or concerns you may have. We’re here to help!
